ALLABOUT NOEL not to be mistaken for Christmas this time.
We had some damage from Noel. Water leaked into the basement kitchen area from two old leak sites. The Department of transportation and Public Works has sent in a crew to attempt to fix the problem areas. They dug up the side entrance to the old basement area all the way down to the footing, reinforced the basement walls with waterproof materials, laid drainage rock and drain pipes. They also dug up the area below the kitchen area and plan to install drainage rock and a window well. There was a leak in the top level of the new building. Darrell Wentzell plans to fix the problem area. The garden arbor collapsed in the storm and is irreparable. Many of our benches were overturned. Sand, rock and seaweed deposits are visible in the medicine wheel and in the area where the teepees stood during this past
season. I am not aware of any other damage. Donna Malone

After this of course we had our first snowstorm to add insult to injury on almost all our beautiful beaches which had suffered greatly during NOEL.
Huge rocks are thrown all over the road and many trees came down bending
over the trees across the roads.
Welcome to Winter in Canada
Snow came early this year, totally unexpected and unnecessary. They promise it will go away again and just come back to make it a white Christmas. Did you know that there are 2/3 of the total world population who have never seen snow in the life?

Looking for an interesting Christmas present?
How about a copy of Joan Dawson's latest book THE MAPMAKERS' LEGACY In this unique and captivating account of Nova Scotia cartographic history , she examines and explains the many maps that illustrate the evolution of our province.

Many thanks to George Himmelman for the items donated to our Marine Room. Very much appriciated.

UPDATE ON OUR INTERPRETIVE PANELS
Thanks to Mary and Bob Fulleman (the truck-driver!) for bringing the completed panels and the installation hardware all the way from the Atlantex plant in East Chezzetcook to LaHave. It really was a truck load! Jim Sewell is storing them until we install them in the spring. We need to
discuss where to place them - it won't be that obvious! Jim
Sewell, 688-1739, jimsewell@eastlink.ca
*************************************
The five panels cover part of the history of the site:
1. 1604 - arrival of Champlain and the existing Mi'kmaq settlements nearby. 2. 1632 - Isaac de Razilly established Fort Ste-Marie-de-Grace. 3. The growth of the area into a small settlement with fruit, vegetables , apple trees and some small farms at Petite Riviere.
4. 1632 - the Chapel, with Capuchin Fathers from France serving the Mi'Kmaq and the early settlers. 5. The LaHave Light - an aid to navigation for Dublin Bay and the LaHave
River, from 1876 to 1954.
We have had full-size copies of them made on in-door quality plastic and these can be reviewed on the walls downstairs in the museum during our meetings

FROM THE MUSEUM
The museum is closed for the winter for visitors. It is a lot of activity ongoing both inside and outside. We have already started to plan for new displays for the spring.
The Inside committee has changed its name to " Accession and Collection
Committee" to better reflect what the Committee is doing. The Committee
still has the same members: Joan Dawson, Maggie Dorning, Doris Wentzell, Edith Wolter, and myself, Marie Sundin.
The Mi'' kmaq display has been taken down for the winter. New display cases will be made during the winter and the artifacts will be displayed
in a better way in the spring. On behalf on the Assession and Collection
Committee. Marie Sundin Chair

FROM THE MI'KMAQ Representative
It feels good to know, we now have a part in a museum that respects and holds many cultures, especially the First Story and the coming of the Acadians. We hope to add workshops and more tours of the Mi'kmaq Village in the future. We had a good summer. In 2008, I plan to do one-day workshops next summer with different themes on Mi'kmaq Culture and Heritage.at the museum
Thank you all. Ellen Hunt Mi'kmaq Representative and board
member.
********************************************
OUR NEW PARK BENCHES I am pleased to report we have only one park bench
left to sell. What a great gift idea for that hard to buy person for Christmas. A $150.00 donation pays for an outside bench with a plaque
naming who donated the bench. Please contact Johanna Rafuse
688-1674.
**************************************************************
FROM THE GARDEN:
Work on the garden has ceased for the winter. Much has been done in trying to bring it back to some form of what an original garden may have looked like. We now have an obelisk in the garden and have plans for next springs plantings.
Earl Smith has completed the stockade fence near the garden and on the water side of the entrance. He is now working in his workshop at home on the gate for the entrance to the Fort which should be ready for
installation in the spring. Marina Fregeau
